Carla joins us on Art for Your Rights
Carla Novi (b.1982) is a Mexican artist. In 2011, she completed a Master’s in Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. Novi has explored different mediums such as painting, writing, sound, performance, documentary filmmaking and storytelling. After graduating she focused on working with different disadvantaged communities with the aim of fighting for human rights. Some of the communities she worked with were garment workers in Bangladesh, people protesting against enforced disappearances in Mexico and unknown writers living in disadvantaged areas in Scotland. After years of working with human rights issues, Novi needed to take a break in 2017 and decided to immerse in a self-exploratory journey in order to get a better understanding of herself and the world around her. Eighteen months later she reconnected with writing and began to use her texts and her voice as her main mediums of expression. During that time, she also attended various voice, storytelling and performative workshops. In 2019 she started performing her stories in Madrid, where she’s currently based.
Novi’s work has been shown in numerous countries including Mexico, USA, Bangladesh, Spain, England, Scotland, Germany, Portugal and Canada.
